The Blue Umbrella

The blue umbrella is a short animation by Pixar. The characters are incredibly simple but it is still a great animation because Pixar makes it so that the viewer relates with the umbrella and feels what the umbrella is feeling. The process of animation is similar to the peanuts movie where its computer generated animation with 2d elements, i think the simplicity in this animation really goes well with this technique. Pixar made the umbrellas blue and red to easily signify the male and female umbrella so that the viewer can understand whats going on easily.

Body Beautiful - Joanna Quinn

Body Beautiful by Joanna Quinn is about being comfortable with your body no matter what size it is. The story consists of Quinn's character Beryl being insulted by the factory bully Vince and Beryl proves to him her usefulness. One thing i like about Joanna Quinns animations is her use of the camera to tell the story, for example in some of the scenes the camera moves from shot to shot gradually, this gives the viewer a sense of the three dimensional scene. I also like how the scenes are not overly coloured, the linework is still visible mostly, i think this adds expression.

Elmando

I saw Elmando at Manchester animation festival and it stood out for me because i really want to work
with paint in animation. The story is about a young Cong child and his struggles when his town is attacked and his mother is kidnapped. The style of music really goes with the painted animation and i really like the panning shot over the landscape, this gives a good impression of where the story is set. I think this animation tells the story very well and in an interesting way, the movement is very realistic and believable and really helps to tell the story.

Chiaroscuro

I saw Chiaroscuro at Manchester animation festival. It was about two organisms competing for one light.
I liked it but i thought it felt very empty and not much really happened. Also i thought there were too
many effects and not enough animation. However is was very good visually and the camera angles and
framing was nice also. There was alot of building up suspense in theanimation and i think its good to
have anticipation but too much just makes it boring. The colours in the animation were mostly greys and
blacks except the fireball, this creates a good indication that the fireball is the main character.

Feast

Feast is a short animation by Disney about how dogs respond to their owners mood. This is a very clever
animation because it uses the sort of food given to the dog as an indicator for the mood of the owner so
the food is really the key factor of the story. I also really like the style of animation used, it is computer
generated animation but with a cell shaded aesthetic which makes the lighting very lush and visually
impressive. The animation is very smooth and feels like its hand drawn almost. Aswell as the food, the
colours help dictate the mood, for example at the beginning the colours are brighter and more vibrant and
towards the end they are darker.

Cases of copyright infringement:

There was a case between Star wars and Battlestar galactica, the issue was that galactica may have
stole too many ideas from star wars. 20th century fox tried to sue universal studios, claiming that
they had stolen ‘34 distinct ideas from star wars’.

There was also a six year long lawsuit between Apple and Microsoft over who first invented the

Edmond

I saw Edmond at Manchester animation festival and it was one of my favorite animations at the festival. I really liked the style of animation, it was stop motion with drawn on expressions, i think this worked really well. The story was funny, serious and interesting. The transitions from scene to scene keep the viewer watching and interested. The colours are very dull and desaturated, this suits the mood of the film and helps the viewer to get a grasp of what the animation is about.

Sea Child

I saw sea child at Manchester animation festival. I liked how the colour scheme throughout was red and black. The animation style is very similar to paint on glass but i think its done in charcoal mostly. The sounds are very crisp and really add to the animation. The animation style complements the dark storyline. I think the story is very interesting and i like the link between the girl and the fish. I also like how the red is used to act like a lighting for the whole scene to set the mood.

Fresh Cut Grass

I saw fresh cut grass at manchester animation festival and i really liked it. I liked the fact that it was a innocent looking animation which had quite a dark theme and story. The look and colours of the animation reflect the view and perspective of the protagonist as the story progresses. At the start of the animation the colours are bright and vibrant because the character is happy and innocent but when he finds his sister at a strip club the colours become darker and much less vibrant, this reflects the shady dark story advancement and also the way the protagonist is now viewing the world. Even the title of the animation reflects the innocent mind of the protagonist.

Guida

I saw Guida at Manchester animation festival, i thought it was a really good animation and i specifically liked that it was hand drawn and watercolours for the colouring. It had a hand crafted feeling that i think most animations are missing. I really liked the fact that it wasn't overly polished because often this takes away a lot of the emotion from the drawings. The story is very heartwarming and really suits the animation style. The squash and stretch in the animation is very effective and doesn't loses the characters mass. I really like the subtle colouring, it doesn't take away from the hand drawn style.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Character Design

The characters in cloudy with a chance of meatballs are very well designed. I find the characters are very charming, funny and incredibly entertaining. Even though barry the strawberry doesn't have as many capabilities for expression as other characters, he is animated in a way that his expressions and movements are very fast which makes him seem like a very hyper child. I like the contrast between the different characters movements for example the leek giraffes are very elegant whilst the pickles are very hyper and clumsy. To establish the olive as an eye on the taco crocodile, the eye olive eye is introduced onto the scene first whilst it is looking around, scanning the area like an eye does.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Animation Test

This is an animation test for cloudy with a chance of meatballs. There is a lot to learn from this animation test, for example the shots help guide the viewer through what's going on. The poses give the viewer a clear idea of how the character is feeling and the characters actions give the viewer a clear idea of what the character is thinking about, the anticipation of the character about to bite into the burger makes sure the viewer knows what the character is about to do. All the movements and actions are exaggerated, this makes the animation entertaining and interesting to watch.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Shot Builds

This video shows how the shot was built up in layers for the jelly castle scene in cloudy with a chance of meatballs. Its interesting to see how a material like jelly can be created in computer graphics so realistically. Also the characters were animated to be stumbling on jelly, which looks really believable. There are a lot of particle effects in this film but at no point does the film feel too robotic, it is always believable because the character animation is very fluid and believable and the effects and animation blend into each other. The layering of effects is similar to how feature live action films use effects.

Cambridge Art Gallery

I went to Cambridge and whilst I was walking around the center of Cambridge I found an art gallery. I made a lot of studies of the sculptures and paintings, I also saw some etchings, the anatomy was very exaggerated in the etchings and this must have taken a very good understanding of anatomy to exaggerate the body like that. I studied the composition in the paintings because this is important in animation and is something I am lacking in. One thing that I realized is that throughout all the mediums the skill of modeling the figure is consistent.

Manchester Art Gallery

When we went to Manchester animation festival during one of the days I went to the Manchester art gallery because I love classical art and I think there is a lot to learn from it. I think classical art links to animation strongly because there is a focus on composition and colour in classical paintings and the poses are vibrant and interesting, something which is also very important in animation. I did lots of studies of the paintings and sculptures to try and learn about the way the figures are placed in the scene and also to capture the poses the figures are in.
